Excellent portable speaker for my echo dot. It looks good and the sound quality is also good, although it is not as good as a full size echo which i also own. I just wish i’d ordered it a little bit later, i could have got it £10 cheaper.
I love that this speaker now make alexa portable. It is great taking it into the bathroom or wherever. Only problem is that i also use it as a bed side device for some quiet tunes as we fall asleep. Using this speaker the minimum volume is still too loud. My workaround is to unplug the internal audio cable to the echo dot. This is easily done and means the sound reverts to the dot alone.
I don’t normally write many reviews but when a product wows me like this does, then i just have to put fingers to keyboard and let everyone know about it. The sound quality of these speakers is amazing. It really does fill the room and you immediately notice a difference when the echo dot is connected to these speakers. This speaker is very stylish. Very quick to set up with no instructions needed. You can use the speakers when plugged into the mains but if you prefer to use them as portable speakers, then that is an option too. I wanted a speaker that i didn’t need bluetooth to connect as i find this method of connection unreliable. You also have the option of plugging in your iphone to the speaker but i really don’t see the point of this. If you want a speaker that is integral to the echo dot making it one whole unit, then this is the speaker of choice for you. Cheaper in the states (isn’t everything?).
Greatly enhances the sound quality and volume of the dot. With this add-on it may even make it a better device than the full size echo as now have the sound quality and portability for cheaper price.

I’ve been using the vaux for a couple of months now. The built in battery means my alexa is now truely portable. I mostly use it in the garden for bbqs etc and love it. Sound quality is very good producing clear, enjoyable music. While it doesn’t compare to the i sonos speakers i have in the main rooms it offers a fantastic solution for the rest.
Have only had speaker for a few days but up to know i am very pleased with the sound reproduction overall. One minor issue, the base tones could be better. Tipwatch the price of the speaker quoted, they do appear to fluctuate frequently.
A huge improvement on sound quality and volume for the dot, if you already have a echo dot and want use it to play music it’s a good solution, if you do not already own a dot however, you need to weigh up the cost af buying both as you can currently buy a second generation echo for £69. 99 while a dot and vaux would currently cost of £14. 50 more, the only advantage is that it makes the dot portable.
I really wanted this to work for me – portable echo dot and speaker would be excellent for moving around the house whilst doing household chores – tinkering in the garage etc. But its way too loud if you want some low background music or listen to an audible book. I like to have music whilst having a meal but i had to move this to the next room because we couldn’t hear one another over the music. To put the volume level into context – the lowest setting on the vaux is equivalent to volume level 4 (probably 5) on the echo dot. For a kitchen or somewhere with a bit of noise this would be great. I know my comments may sound harsh but others have purchased inline volume controls to try and reduce the volume so i’m not the only one with this problem. A speaker should give a good range of volume control to suit most situations (without buying an add-on) but i’m afraid this does not.
Pro’s: as a family we now own 3 of these devices, the ability to transport the echo dot to wherever its required without the need to think about power sockets is a boon. Loud enough to make its self heard, even the nosiest of bbq’s, in the garden. (you’ll need a decent wi-fi signal). The battery life seems pretty good, 6 hrs whilst in the garden at volume 4/5; darn right loud at volume 9/10con: as other reviewers have reported we had one ninety 7 “die” on us, it was working well (about 6 months) and the next time it was activated – nothing.Still connected to the power socket, so should have been fully charged, indicator came on for a second then off again. Could be a defective batch of batteries?. Replaced by amazon with no quibbles, new one going strongoverall – if you have an echo dot and want increased mobility/volume get one of these. Don’t expect hi-fi sound, its standard speaker, if you want super sound buy a hi-fi system. An excellent piece of kit for what it does, as previously mentioned we have 3 of these – all are in use most days and we’re happy with them.
Fits nicely and easy to use. Not sure how long the battery lasts, but i have streamed music for 5 hours without it running out. The speaker quality isn’t as fantastic as a real echo, but it’s great if you want portability and it’s better than the echo dot for music. Now i can take alexa out into the garden and around the house.
I bought an echo and a dot – connected the dot to a bluetooth speaker – all good but kept having to connect or disconnect – a bit tedious, saw this and thought ‘what the hell’. Comparing the dot in the vaux to the echo?.Well – as others have said – the bass isn’t as good – but that’s comparative – when it arrived and i first tried it i was very happy with the quality, and it’s £50. I then pondered on the fact that for the dot/vaux combined price i could have had another echo. . Then my brain re-engaged – i can unplug this combination and take it to the bathroom, the kitchen, the garden (wifi/bt permitting) and still keep shouting at alexa. I say shouting (slight exaggeration) because there does seem to be a reduction in the ability of the dot to hear me – but there is no loss of review stars for that compared to the ‘upgrade’ this piece of clever kit gives my ‘echo-system’ (rubbish pun). And – (after changing the ‘wake’ word on one device) – when it’s don’t care about the neighbours time – enable ‘music everywhere’ and both speakers in the one room. If you have an echo dot – buy this – if you have an echo dot and an echo.
As others have said its quite loud even on a sound setting of 1. However if you have a large room thats what you need. Works great in the garden and tge extra volume works great. Also very little distortion even at full volume. I very happy with it and will buy another with my next echo.
Bought as a gift for my mum as she was disappointed with her choice of dot after hearing the sound quality of our echo. She is absolutely over the moon and says it’s now better than an echo because she can move it around with her.
This speaker has made the echo dot so much more versatile it means we can now bring the unit out into the garden without the need for external power leads the sound quality is pretty good and the volume is more than adequate the battery gives about 5 to 6 hrs running time i would highly recommend this device. I have also discovered if i am out of range of my wifi i can use the alexa app on my phone via 4g data and link the phone through the phono jack.
Have had one of these six months now and have been very pleased with it and it’s performance. I frequently move around the house with this and it gives me hours of wireless play. Was a big hit at a garden party in the summer with alexa being the dj and taking all the requests, we ran out of steam long before this did. Very happy with the purchase and considering another for a second dot in the bedroom.
I have now purchase three of these speakers as i have been so impressed with their sound and potability. Having turned up the base of the echo app graphic equaliser, the sound quality in my opinion is better than my echo 2nd generation. They do not distort even at maximum volume and i am constantly amazed at the quality of the sound. I often listen to music in my bedroom and then unplug the speaker and continue listening to the music while taking a show. Once finished i take it back into the bedroom and continue listening. What can be better than this?. You guessed the price in the first place, i challenge anybody to find a better sounding speaker for the same money. Don’t hesistate just buy one, it iwll be the best purchase you have made all year.
Very impressed to be honest. Was using the dot with a bluetooth speaker that i wanted to replace and the came across this. Looks great and setup, sound is pretty good and for the money it’s a good alternative to a separate unit. You can’t compare the sound quality to the normal echo, as this just hasn’t got the same depth and base, but for a medium size room it works perfectly. Would 5 star if has some seperate base/treble control on the unit, but all in all, very happy.
This has turned my little dot into a very enjoyable music machine. I never had the full echo, just the dot and, to be honest, playing music through it was embarrassing. This speaker has turned the dot into a great music player. The dot fits perfectly in the top and two lead connect into the dot from the speaker and i was set up in seconds. The sound quality for the price is excellent and the best thing is i’ve now got a portable alexa device thanks to the built in rechargeable batteries. I’ve had this on my wishlist for ages and i wish i’d taken the plunge sooner. A great quality speaker for a reasonable price.
I can now move my echo dot around the house with me. Sound quality is decent & being hard wired, it is much better than bluetooth for ‘short’ audio such as lists. It looks similar to a proper echo, but the light ring is partially hidden so if it is sitting on a slightly higher shelf, you can’t see if it had responded to the wake word. Volume control is quite poor: i wanted to play some music but setting 1 was not very quiet. I often use my mk1 echo to play sleep sounds but the vaux is way too loud for that. I don’t like having to plug it in each time. I feel that either the plug or socket will weaken through repeated plugging & unplugging. I think a kettle-style base would be much better. Overall a good product but i would not be surprised to see an improved version.
I bought one of these for myself and was so pleased with it that i bought two more as gifts. Easy to set up and the sound quality is good. The dot is so much louder now although sometimes alexa can’t hear instructions if music is playing. Haven’t tried using it battery powered. I use it in the kitchen and it’s ideal for that.
This is a good speker for the echo but lacks the precise volume control that the echo dot has. For example, whe n you want to reduce the volume you could go fromvolume 3 to zero with no sound at volume 1 or 2 , if that makes sense. Other than that at higher volume levels its a good spound, the unit looks and feels good quality.
1 star less because i think it reduces alexas sensitivity to sound. I have two alexas in my house i speak to the one in my room with the speaker and it doesn’t respond, the naked alexa all the way in the other room responds.
