Soundlab Pillow Speaker : Great Item, short lifespan

I bought this to use with my tv at night so i can lie on the sofa or in bed and watch and listen without disturbing my husband. Having read some other reviews on this i was a bit concerned i would not be able to hear this through the pillow as i am slightly deaf, especially in one ear but i was amazed at the clarity and volume this little speaker has. The only down side is that the cable, although long enough for most purposes, isn’t quite long enough to reach across the room to my tv so i’ve ordered an extension. All in all, this is an excellent value for money product.

Bought this to replace the bulky speaker that came with my pillow and it is amazing. I play nature sounds while trying to fall asleep at night and occasionally relaxation sessions on mp3, both from my phone. When placed under the pillow, i can’t feel it at all though of course that depends on the type of pillow you use. I can hear it clearly even when not directly above it, but my partner next to me doesn’t hear it at all, so it won’t disturb him. While playing via my phone, i use a sleep timer to automatically turn off after an hour – available for free in the app store, probably for all mobile operating systems. Would definitely recommend this.

  • pillow speaker to listen to relaxation or self-hypnosis recordings on a settee or bed

Just pop it in ur pillowcase and listen to some relaxing music.

It wont win over any audiophiles (as one myself i can attest to that) but you will never get high quality from a speaker this size. I can now listen to my music in bed without disturbing my wifemine is running from a stereo amp via the headphone out, and runs perfectly even at extremely low volume.

Bought 2 sets of these, one for my teenage daughter who listens to music before going to sleep and fr my 82 year old mother in law who suffers from tinitus, my daughter it as she was always breaking her headphones when she turned over in bed now no problem, she’s amazed that she’s the only one who can hear it/my mother in lay loves it because we have put her favourite music on and she says it helps to disguise the buzzing of the tinitus.

SoundLAB Pillow Speaker with 3.5 mm Jack Plug : If i lie flat against the pillow, i can hear my story and fall asleep. However i can’t do this for too long as it is quite lumpy and in order to hear it well enough and still keep the sound muffled from sleeping partner it needs to be right under my ear. The decision to be made is the discomfort of earphones versus the lumpy pillow. I remain undecided and like to ring the changes. Some days i use this speaker and others the earphones.

This is a neat little speaker and just about does the job. I use it to relax at night to music from my tablet without disturbing my neighbours. Some songs are a little quiet soo i just don’t play those. Delivery was excellent, too.

My only gripe is that it died about five months after purchase, and the price had gone up when i went to re-purchase. Ended up opting to replace with branded under-pillow speaker, which has turned out to have more longevity.

I listen to audiobooks to help me sleep and this pillow speaker really helps to make it so i can hear the books but my wife can’t. I couldn’t really say what the sound quality is like as i wouldn’t use them for music just speech.

Works well considering its size and price. I used it on a dab radio and the sound range was just what i wanted. Loud enough to hear through a pillow, but quiet enough not to disturb a radio-phobic partner. After two years the wires broke where they enter the casing and it really isn’t practical to repair (i tried), so it just had to be chucked away. Otoh, it worked for two years, and its cheap.

I purchased this for my daughter as a xmas prezie as wearing ear phones is annoying in bed and she loves listening to her music especially as my autistic son dosnt sleep much and keeps her awake, this helps alot, infact i ordered another for myself, love it. The only thing i would say is it does not drown out my hubbies snoring and he could also hear the sound even though it wz under my pillow but im happy with it, and a great price 👍👍👍.

Good value for a pillow speaker. I’m on my second one as the cable seems to have degraded at the connection to the speaker. But it’s lasted a good few years. Much better than the roberts one which isn’t worth the money. Update, i’m now on my third speaker, same problem as with first speaker. Second only lasted 18 months, rather disappointing. However still good value for what it is. I use it a lot in the small hours. Have never found it satisfactory to use under the pillow but wedge it between my shoulder and top of pillow.

We get through lots of these as the cables quickly become broken causing intermittent operation. This isn’t confined to the soundlab products, it applies to all othe others from cheap to expensive so its good to see these competitively priced.

This did the job, as others have written it is very quiet but it needs to be to be able to accurately control the volume without disturbing your partner. Just right for some gentle background music to put you to sleep but don’t expect to use for audiobooks or appreciating good music.

I bought one for me and one for my son, we both like to listen to music while we sleep, i find earphones uncomfortable to sleep with, so this was a great alternative. I can listen to my relaxation music without disturbing anyone. I have a memory foam pillow even with my mp3 volume on 8/9 i can still hear it clearly, my son has a micro fibre pillow and he can hear it with no problems. Great gadget, cheap price, and it does exactly what it says it will.

I bought this item for my youngest daughter (13) who likes to listen to music in bed. I had some doubts that it would work, having seen some negative reviews, but as i paid quite a lot more for a similar device, the only benefit of which being it was already encased in a pillow, this was cheap enough to risk an experiment. My daughter is quite happy, (so far) she has used the more expensive pillow in the past, and did not report any difference in sound quality or convenience, and i have saved a considerable amount of money. It will be easier to wash the pillow also.

Pros:- the speaker arrived quickly, it seems well-made and it was certainly good valuecons:- the output is just too quiet. I tried it with my phone, my radio and my tablet, all on full volume, but it was still too quiet. It it’s barely heard on the other side of the pillow and i had to put it outside the pillow to hear it, which kind of defeats its purpose.

I have bought a load of these. One for travel, one for spare and one for everyday use. You can lull yourself to sleep without disturbing anyone else. I have now come to rely on it and can’t sleep without it.

I see some folks have commented about the audio quality of this device. True audiophiles, this is not for you. :-)however, for a bit of late-night radio listening this is just fine. Build-quality looks good/robust. Sound level and quality is perfectly adequate. Can’t comment on long-term durability, but at under £3. 50 including postage it only needs to last 20% as long as the ‘market leading’ device to represent good value. It’s also much thinner than some others and so much for comfortable. To be honest i was not expecting much at this price but i’m impressed.

I use this with my ipad and think it’s great. The sound quality is fine and i have it under my pillow and have no problem hearing it. I’ve used earphones but often get sore ears or end up tangled up in them so this solves both problems.

I received the ‘soundlab pillow speaker’ today, which arrived a day before the expected delivery date. This was brilliant, and was really happy with the service. As soon as the product arrived, i had to see what it was like. It fitted nicely between the pillows in the pillowcase. The cable is long enough so that you can rest your phone/ipod on a desk or window ledge which is great. As seen in the picture, it seems as though you only get a short cable. Anyway, when i plugged this amazing little pillow speaker into my phone, it worked wonders. Only myself could hear it which is remarkable. The sound quality and the actual quality of the product is outstanding.

As another reviewer has mentioned this totally solves the problem of listening to audio without disturbing your partner. The only reason for not awarding 4 stars is perhaps more to do with the driving device. I use this with a mobile phone and some audio is faint but i suspect that this is more to do with the audio ranmge of the mobile. I guess the 5 star up from thsi would be a pillow speaker with an in-built booster.

  1. The level of terrible of this speaker is quite shocking. I know it is very cheap, but i expect it to do a reasonable job. Speakers are not expensive things to produce, i made one in my school electronics class that was infinitely better than this. 1) sound quality is so poor that you need to turn it louder to hear it. That utterly defeats the purpose. I am 38 and have excellent hearing, but i cannot hear this sufficiently when playing any audiobooks or radio, or even song lyrics, unless my partner also can. 2) sound comes out the sides of the speakers which as other people have mentioned is completely the opposite of what is required. Combined with above means this speaker is not fit for purpose as a pillow speaker. I would have returned it but at £3.

  2. Really well made and solid speaker good cable sleeve where cable enters the speaker (this is often where the cable connection fails on most pillow speakers. Cable is also a good thickness and flexibility and is less likely to crack like on my previous speakers. I was pleased it did not have volume control as i use the volume control at source. Very clear at low and high volumeseasily the best under pillow speaker i have had in the last 30 years.

    • So much so that there is a huge sound reduction as the speaker is encapsulated within heavy duty plastic casing. And only the tiny side openings to distribute any audio. As this is essentially for use under a pillow i would have thought the speaker would benefit from openings above it, allowing the audio to travel up through the pillow rather than outwards. If you’re after a pillow speaker i wouldn’t recommend this style of product.

    • I bought this so that i can watch movies on my ipad during bouts of insomnia, i did use earphones but this caused sore ears and often i awoke with the lead tangled around my neck. The price seemed too good to be true but after reading the reviews regarding this item, i took a chance with it. This speaker is absolutely perfect for the job it is not too thick to be placed under a pillow and the item its self seems to be very well made and sturdy. The down side is the volume was a little low as it was, but i drilled several holes on the top of the unit and this has made the volume much louder. An absolutely fantastic purchase at an absolutely fantastic price.

I listen a lot to audio books in bed and was at constant risk of strangling myself with the earphones. This is easy to position, very clear and does not disturb my husband. The only thing i would say is that the top pillow does need to be quite thin to be able to hear it.

Volume is good (people must have concrete pillows if they can’t hear this) and a lovely long flexible lead. I listen to audiobooks to drop off to sleep every night and this is just perfect. I can’t comment on it’s suitability for music because i haven’t tried it for that. For my needs it ticks every box.

    • We have used these pillow speakers, for about 4 years now, they can be used at comfortable volume levels, and if youover drive them, they will cut out,(self protection) and resume when the volume is reduced. The wires,at the speaker end, need to be handled with care, otherwise, they are bullet proof.

    • Aging has brought with it occasion insomnia; this for me. Together with an app providing soothing sounds/music. Under my pillow, it is not uncomfortable, sound is adequate for this purpose and seems sturdy enough to last.

I had much higher expectations from this. If you just put your phone under your pillow you’d probably get the same results. It might be slightly louder but the sound is pretty muffled from it. So really not great but it’s ok.

    • I bought two of these for my parents, as one listens to the radio at random times during the night and the other recorded plays, and they constantly wake each other up. Both reported that you had to have the speaker turned up to full volume to be able to hear it through the pillow, thus defeating the object of not waking up the other person. Well, you get what you pay for.

Tuck it under your pillow and listen to your radio or mp3 player without disturbing your partner. I used some insulating tape wrapped around the wire where it enters the unit just as a precaution as i’ve noted some reviewers saying the wire had come loose but probably not needed because it seems very secure. A great little product for anyone suffering a sleepless night or just wanting to listen to media without disturbing anyone else.

The whole point of buying this was to stop my wife hearing my radio but this speaker cannot do this. The sounds come from the side grills not directly up into the pillow so i need to raise the volume up way too high in order to hear anything.

I got this as i suffer tinnitus. It goes under my pillow, i connect up my phone, put some classical music on and the sound comes through the pillow at just the right level. It’s capable of being louder (i have it under half volume) too so i can’t understand why, unless you’re seriously hard of hearing, it’s considered too quiet by some. Don’t buy it as a mobile speaker – it wouldn’t be loud enough, the sound wouldn’t be satisfying. But, for its intended purpose (with a pillow diffusing the sound), it’s perfect. Under £3 with quick delivery?. Don’t spend more without at least trying this.

This pillow speaker provides an adequate level of sound with the radios i have tried it with, and sufficient quality of sound for treating insomnia. It appears to be well built, but only time will tell how reliable it is – the connection between the input cable and the speaker is always a potential problem area. Very good value for money, i have ordered another one.

    • Does what it says it will do. Don’t expect a big sound but close up the sound is clear and easy to hear. I use the pillow speaker with my mp3 and a cd walkman and disturb no one.

My serving one of these, the first lasted a few years of nightly use. They work much better if you drill a series of small holes on the top of the casing, then you can slide the speaker directly under your ear under the pillow.
