I’ve had quite few bluetooth speakers at various price points. This one is quite expensive for a smaller speaker, but i think it is good value as i have found the performance to be outstanding. The dimensions are fairly square. It’s a little shorter than and iphone 6 and a little wider, and the depth is about the same as the width of the iphone. It sits nicely either landscape or portrait. There are simple controls along one side with power, volume, and connect/answer (i’ve not used it for voice calls). There is a rubber cover to the ports (as the speaker is water resistant) offering aux in and out, the charging port and a usb out to charge other devices (not really much use). Taking into account the size of the unit i think the sound quality is excellent and smooth. Bass will never rattle the windows on small speakers but i found it perfectly acceptable. The kids really like it to take out with them and for a bedroom speaker it’s a great option.
Easy to set up, despite fairly poor instructions being provided. Volume up and down controls are obvious. I prefer to use my tablet or phone to change tracks, although this can be done using the volume controls. Sound for a box this size is excellent and certainly loud enough for my needs, although some other reviewers have questioned this. Haven’t dunked it to see if it’s waterproof, but have used it out in the garden and wouldn’t be too worried if it was caught in a shower. Overall, very good, versatile little speaker. Don’t know i’d want to lug it about on walks and the like, but for static outdoor activities, camping, caravaning, fishing and the like, it certainly would be a useful addition. Lots of connectivity options: aux, aux out, micro usb and usb. I have tested it listening to trance from the ‘markus schulz – global dj broadcast’. Kick drums and basslines sound very punchy. I really liked using this for netflix. You can hear all small details. Moving the speaker face up will help disperse the sound. Filling a bigger area, making it more immersive.
Good sound quality goes about aloud as my sonos 1. Slightly bigger than expected but at the same time nicely compact.
I’m very, very pleased with this. I started off by using it in our kitchen while cooking, paired with my windows mobile phone (a nokia lumia 930). Mainly for things like podcasts and audio books – and the occasional blast of music. It pairs very quickly with my phone, has great sound quality, and when you want to blast out a few songs, has actually pretty impressive power for it’s size. Just that, on it’s own, was enough to make it an incredibly useful addition to our kitchen. And then i figured out that you can actually make calls with it. If i receive a call on my phone, the music / audio book stops, and when i answer the call the barricade acts as a handsfree bluetooth unit – and according to my wife, the quality on the other end is actually pretty good. These two things are pretty awesome, and totally sell the unit to me. And then i figured out that it can take an 8 hour charge, and that i could take it with me in the car, or on a camping trip, or to a hotel room. On top of that, it looks good, and it’s robust. Skullcandy – it’s a great product, really. Very pleased to have one, and i’d give it six stars if i could.
Skullcandy Barricade Bluetooth Wireless Portable Speaker – Black/Transparent : Good quality for the money very pleased.
Very handy and sturdy device. I haven’t tested it in water yet as i don’t want to really test fate. It’s not too big either so i can pack it to take away as i can’t sleep without something playing in the background so this is very handy. As it runs off a rechargeable batteries so don’t have to scrabble around for a nearby plug. It has a nice clean sound and can get very loud as well so i can use it at guide meetings.
Amazing sound quality for such a compact speaker.
The skullcandy barricade is an excellent portable speaker. It’s reasonably small – about 10 by 12 by 8 cm – yet the 10w speaker still provides a loud punchy sound, more so than its dimensions might suggest. The speaker grill is metal, the main body plastic with a rubberised top, bottom and edges. A rubber port protector over the various sockets, rubberised buttons on top and a raised rubber ridge on the base means it sits firmly wherever it’s put. Advertised as ipx7 water resistant – which actually means it should survive full immersion. With that in mind it would easily withstand a heavy rainshower with no trouble. The aforementioned ports consist off a 3. 5mm out (allowing dual connection of speakers), a mini usb port for charging the speaker and a full size usb port which can be used to charge another device.
The sound quality and volume ranges are very good. The connection via bt is ok – i live in a flat and can get a signal 2 thirds of the way from one end to the other (or if i put my tablet in the middle i can move the speaker to every room and with doors shut). There are only a couple of buttons and the work intuitively this is not too small but also not obtrusive. Currently it is hanging on a kitchen cupboard door. This is a marked improvement over listening to my tablets speakers. It loses a star because i would love it to have micro sd card reader and then it would be perfect.
What’s good:sturdy and well-madewaterproofergonomic controlsthoughtful design toucheswhat’s not so good:output power for charging a device is too low to be usefulbass performance is limitedan integral card-reader would have been a nice featureexpensive compared to competitionpackaging could be betteri really like this little speaker. What it lacks in bass performance and wholesome sound, it easily makes up in sensible design and seemingly great build quality. After demolishing the outer packaging to get in (which could really be improved upon) you are presented with a nice compact boxy speaker which has a good sturdy feel about it. There are slightly rubberised feet on two sides to help it sit stably on a surface, and there is a useful canvas hook on one side. The controls are simple with a power button, a plus and minus button which double up as track advance and track rewind, and a middle button that functions as the play/pause or call answer button. Under a water-sealing flap there are the charge in micro usb socket, as well as a full-size usb output socket – this is a bit of a non-starter for me because it cannot put out enough power to make it useful, especially given the power draw of most modern audio-hosting devices such as smartphones. For an older phone that doesn’t require strong charging power it might be sufficient. Connection can be made either with a 3. 5mm audio jack (in which case the waterproofing will be compromised), or via bluetooth. I generally use bluetooth and found the performance to be perfectly adequate.
