  1. I had the big 200w versions of these back in 1988 together with a pioneer 100w amplifer/tuner, cd player and turntable, and was pretty much the ultimate music system. When dvds came along ten years later they really gave my films a real cinematic feel on account of the amplified sound. Sadly around 2007 when the amp died, i foolishly got rid of the speakers. And since then it’s been a trial and error exercise trying to re-create some of the aural splendour of that old setup. I’ve tried mini-amps with bookshelf speakers, 2. 1 computer speakers (actually not bad with the sub-woofer), but they were underwhelming for my movies. Last year i finally relented and bought a new pioneer amp – 50w this time mind with some highly regarded wharfdale bookshelf speakers. They were great at low to medium volumes for music, but at high volumes for the movies, they displayed noticeable distortion and the bass was so-so, which meant weak explosions in action films. Next came some skytronic tower speakers, which at £60 delivered, was too much of a temptation to pass.
