Maxell MXSB 252 Digital SoundBase TV Speaker – Digital Soundbase

I bought one of these based on various reviews i’d read and i have to say that i’m thrilled with the maxell 252. First off, i was concerned as to how my 40′ sony bravia would look perched on top of it. However, the machine is somehow larger than i expected (about the size of a wii fit board) and sturdy enough to take it quite comfortably whilst remaining aesthetically pleasing, which is quite a feat. Connections-wise, the maxell is well stocked. Some may bemoan the lack of bluetooth, which would certainly make this soundbase the finished article, but having owned a roth sub zero ii and never really bothered with the bluetooth on that, it’s no big deal for me. What the maxell does have is optical, rca and 3. 5mm line connections, along with 3 hdmi inputs and one output incorporating arc capability, which means that you can connect 3 hdmi devices directly to the soundbase and run another hdmi cable from it to your tv provided it’s arc compatible, thus the maxell becomes the ‘switcher’ for everything connected. I’ve tried all variations in terms of connectivity and each one holds it’s own. 5mm jack to the headphone socket of the tv and ran it to the optical connection of the maxell via an analogue to digital converter. It meant that i could operate the unit with my tv remote and throw the maxell’s in the drawer, whilst enjoying smooth, digital sound. After a while, i decided to connect all my hdmi devices to the maxell and use the arc facility. The difference in sound was unbelievable, especially when i connected everything using ‘high speed’ hdmi cables rather than standard ones (contrary to popular belief, they do make a difference, but you don’t have to spend a fortune on them). I was still able to operate the unit using my tv remote, only using the maxell’s to change input occasionally.

I had no issues in hooking it up and sound is amazing. The only comment i would make is that i was led to believe no cables was included this was not true item came with, hdmi, optical and audio cables. If i had of known this i would have saved a few quid, however this item is a perfect sound bar.

Have been looking for sometime to add a sound bar to improve the sound on our tv. I didn’t want to spend a lot though, and after checking the reviews on amazon decided to take the plunge and buy one. Reassured i was not disappointed. Great design sits under the tv no problem and has great sound and very easy to set up.

  • Definitely an improvement on TV speakers.
  • Excellent value sound base (bar)
  • Excellent product and services

Brilliant, neat and tidy sound system. 1 surround sound without wires then this is the unit for you. With a variety of connectors for device input it delivers superb sound for the price. It is not full adjustable, but if you can adjust the sound via the tv which does the same thing. The tv will sit neatly on top of this stylish unit.

The sound quality from the soundbase is definately better than the speakers on my samsung led tv. This has greatly improved my viewing experience by making dialogue more audible particlarly when spoken in heavy regional accents. The equipment sits neatly under my tv and requires only a power and optical connection which avoids lots of visible cables. The instruction book shows numerous connection methods using hdmi cables but does not make it clear which features are required on the other equipment, tv, pvr, satelite etc to ensure that sound is syncronised with the picture. If you have a number of sources connected to the tv via hdmi and optical output available then using this to connect the soundbar is the way to go and an optical cable should be supplied rather than the other cables included.

Definitely an improvement on tv speakers. . Seems to be quite solidly constructed and has a non intrusive appearance. I connected the sound base to my tv via an optical cable. I have a skybox and a dvd player connected to my tv via hdmi connections and all the various sources (freeview, dvd, sky) automatically feed to the sound base. The sound is certainly an improvement over the tinny speakers of my led television. My wife and i sometimes struggled to hear the dialogue of certain programmes, especially as it seems to be fashionable these days for actors to whisper their lines. This sound base makes it far easier to hear what’s going on. Hopefully, no more rewinding the program to try to hear what was just saidi don’t think the quality of sound is at the high end of the hifi spectrum, and it’s not as loud as i would have imagined, but it certainly gives more depth to dialogue and that was the requirement as far as we were concerned. One very useful feature that i didn’t expect is the ability of the sound base to automatically switch itself on and off. Basically, when you switch your tv off, after a couple of minutes the sound base recognises that it has not received any input and switches itself to standby mode.

Connected my maxell system with an optical lead work’s well in conjunction with the tv speakers when setting the sound level put the tv on mute first sounds great on films and music channels awesome on my xbox all in all a great improvement on my tv speakers well worth the money.

Really nice piece of kit, great sound. Fantastic sound for the price. Have a samsung 32inch led, it should be noted that using hdmi worked however the sound seemed slightly out from the picture due to pass through, and your tv can only control sound bar volume if it is arc enabled. Ours flickered green every so often and is a problem with how hdmi handles encrypted feeds on some tvs and inputs. Used the included headphone cable into the tv, turned the sound bar up fully and bass on, and the sound is amazing with the tv controlling the volume now. The jump in volume and dynamic range, along with clarity is striking.

Maxel mxsb 252 digital soundbar tv speaker. The 32′ sony tv is in a spare room which i use when my wife is watching the other tv. The sound is really good and i have no complaints with it whatsoever. I had previously contacted bose but their similar product was about £350.

After having read some reviews i was a little dubious on what to expect from this device. I have downsized on my tv gadgets and decided to route all devices to the tv and then to the maxwell mxsb 252 unit. This means that you do not have to select the sound source every time you change from tv or dvd etc. For my needs this worked very well, the tv volume is set very low and the volume is now controlled via the sound base controller. The base response is a great improvement on the tv performance and overall clarity is perfect for me. I have to say that i have the sound set at a standard listening level and have only wound the volume up when i was initially setting up the system. This is not a system for you if you want to blow your brains out. I am aware other reviewers have critisised the remote controller, however it does work well but the buttons do feel as if they are a little fragile. At the price this unit offers excellent value for the money.

Excellent value for money. . For £80 this soundbar is a snip. The sound quality from my sony 32′ tv has been improved by 100%, particularly the bass. I would have given it 5 stars if the remote control was not so small and fiddly.

Very good quality for the price. . Good quality sound, 3 bass boost options and srs which works well with a good quality sound source. This is a very slimline system and i am using it standing on its side beside the wall and it becomes virtually unseen. Please note that if you use it horizontally the width is exactly as the width of a 32 inch lcd. I could not it under my tele in that way as my table is not that deep. Second if you try to use it with your phone you might find that the sound is a bit low for some songs by when used with a proper pc or tv its perfect. We bought it to be used with our short throw projector for those late night bedroom movies and its perfect and matches the sound of the 70 inch screen. If you are looking for incredible sound that is very very high volume and bassy with virtual 7. 1 surround technology the only other product that does that is the yamaha yas 101: http://www. My old tv was linked through my stereo for watching movies as i enjoy big sound when watching them but when i bought a new tv i couldn’t get the sound to synch with the picture no matter what i did, so the only option was a soundbar. I had been looking at this one for a while, it had favourable reviews and once the price dropped decided to go for it and i’m glad i did. First off every cable you need is in the box, including optical so no need to buy any cables. Hooking it up was easy, just plug and go. The sound with the optical cable was ok but not as loud as i would like however the sound through the rc out (headphone) cable was fantastic, once i had it set to just the right level on my tv. Definetly a chance of annoying the neighbours if i’m not careful. I have read complaints about the remote and it is small but perfectly workable and don’t forsee any problems with ‘losing it down the sofa’if decent sound, not amazing or up to 5. 1 surround sound but decent, is what you are after then buy this unit with confidencei would definetly recommend this unit.

One of the best audiovisual purchases i ever made. We decided during the summer that we needed a soundbar for our samsung flatscreen tv as with the windows open we had to turn the volume up to about 25 to hear a dvd, and even then it wasn’t good enough. The problem with most soundbars is that they are quite intrusive in size, often designed to fit below a wall-mounted flatscreen. If mounted in front of a table-top tv on a low stand, they looked too big and also cover the remote sensor on the tvstep forward the maxell mxsb-252. It fits underneath the tv and the tv stand sits nicely on top. The platform is very stable, and the set even gives you some sticky gel pads to further stabilise and insulate the tv from the soundbar. It has three hdmi in and one hdmi out connectors, enabling hd connectivity with tv, dvd or sky box. It has a tiny remote which can be custom-programmed with basic tv functions, enabling the use of that one teeny remote to control tv on/off, channel and volume control, av input selection and menu enter buttons, and of course the soundbar functions – excellentas for the sound, well, it has a simulated surround sound like many 2. 1 systems, and it is remarkable effective. The sound quality using the hdmi cable is superb, perfectly synchronised with the picture (no lag at all) and the volume is massive compared to the tv speakers.

Excellent for the price, but dont set expectations too high. I wanted to boost the sound of our tv in what is quite a large room and had previously been using a yamaha dsp cinema system with speaker in each corner of the room etc. (a complicated system for what was a simple requirement), so decided to try a soundbar solution which was much simpler and neater. Having looked at all the low to mid range products i decided that based on price, specification and reviews to go for the maxell, and have not been disappointed at all, so fari agree with the previous reviewers, its not a theatre filling loud system, and for me using the tv speakers as well as the bar helps ‘fill out’ the sound very nicely. At the moment its connected to a 32′ lg lcd tv via an optical tos cable and works well, but i do intend to try connecting via an hdmi cable as the tv has hdmi out and hopefully i will be able to control all the levels from the tv. For less than you can buy a no brand unit in a leading supermarket this system has more input choices, good sound quality and good aesthetics. As log as your not wanting or expecting ultimate hi-fi sound quality then for the price this unit cannot be beaten.

Excellent product and services. Having recently moved to a larger house, we upgraded to a larger tv also (philips 39′ led, bought from richer sounds). Whilst the sound quality is adequate, we decided to invest in a budget sound bar seeking greater clarity and depth. I spent many days researching the options on this and other sites and eventually settled for the maxell which does not appear to be widely available. I could find no english reviews of this sound bar and finally considered google translations of a number of german websites. Whilst the translations were a little hit and miss, nevertheless the reviews were all positive. The features that attracted me to the maxell are:1. I liked the design and the fact that the tv sits on top of the sound bar. (4 soft rubber cushions are supplied which you fix on top of the sound bar to reduce any possible vibration). Whilst there are similar cheaper options available, they did not appear to be as robust nor have as wide a range of connection options.

Yes i think this a great piece of kit. It sits under my samsung 42 inch tv and looks really great. The sound is pretty good for something of this price. Thanks to amazon for that and their good service. The controller is a bit small in my hands but it works just fine. I had a bit of head scratching with some of the connectors, but it was soon worked out. Ps this replaced a more expensive sound system which went faulty.

At present 4 stars awarded, easy to set up,big improvement in sound quality from sony bravia tv. 5 star if it stands the test of time, only had the sound bar a couple of months, on the way to 5 star.

Purchased the 252 unit as the sound from my new lg tv was terrible. Connected the maxell using the optical connection and was blown away by just how much better the sound became, blu ray and dvd sound amazing and regular tv broadcasts benefit hugely, really beefs up the sound to mini-cinema like levels. Negatives are minor, it could do with more sound effect presets, there are 2 for bass and one for surround (srs), another level per pre-set would be nice. Also the unit is quite big with a sizeable footprint, so make sure it will fit on your chosen tv stand before purchase. Biggest gripe is the remote, does what it’s supposed to but is tiny and easily goes missing (at present mine is lost and i am trying to get a replacement)proper cinema buffs will probably require more but as a simple device to bolster the awful sound from stock tv speakers, it really is spot on and at the price is a steal.
