Libratone Zipp Mini Wireless tooth and Wifi Speaker, i honestly cannot find a fault

Stylish design & clear sound. The zipp mini is packaged and indeed feels like a quality device; it’s got a nice weight to it and a sturdy feel, and when handled you can tell that it’s made from quality materials. I originally gave it 4 stars, but a big flaw on the radio front meant i had to down-grade it (see later on). The review short version:sound quality: 3. 5 (depending on taste, see below)ease of setup: 3. 5ease of use: 4style: 4features/expandability: 5there are more things to consider; read on. Now i know you want to hear how it sounds, but i’ll treat this review like the device treats a user. You can’t use it until you set it up using their software, so that’s where the review will begin. Finding and downloading it is easy, with qr codes dotted around for android users (on the base of the device for example) and simple search of the app store for iphone/ios. Once installed, the first thing it makes you do is register (you can’t use the software if you don’t, but you can ask them to forget you afterwards) and it explains it will use data on how the device is used by you to improve its products. First black mark for me; even if anonymised, i don’t like this erosion of privacy that more things make you accept these days. You may feel differently of course. Once you get past this, you are challenged with actual setup. Instructions are scant, with a minimal icon based leaflet stored in the lid (see picture).

My experience with this speaker has been excellent. It was easy to set up, no fight to get my devices to find or recognise it at all – which makes a refreshing changethe sound quality is excellent, the tube design gives really clear 360 degree sound so standing this in the centre of my room meant that it was great all the way around, not better at the front and a bit off at the side/rear because the speaker wasn’t pointed at you. This is brilliant for coffee tables as the whole room has a great listening experience, though it does mean that it seems a little quieter than i expected, simply because you no longer get that ‘blasted’ in the face experience of a traditional speaker. Looks wise this is quite quirky, with a smooth white base and a textured material body, definitely not how speakers used to look, but stylish and funky. The sound quality is amazing, crystal clear. It is very easy to use and the instructions cover all you need to know, i also like being able to use the speakers control panel to control my music rather than having to use my phone for everything as sometimes this just isn’t practical. The speaker is able to work with others, though only having one i have not tested this for myself. The build quality is good, everything is slick and expensive looking, overall it is just great and i love it.

Good speaker let down by poor app and lack of extras. Libratone have made a good speaker with decent sound but a truly horrible app. The speaker itself was bigger than i was expecting – similar in size to a kitchen worktop bin for teabags etc – and seems to be well made and nicely finished. It comes with a good length braided power cord with both eu and uk plug adaptors which attach to a fairly chunky plug unit. I’m not entirely convinced by the zip design but i guess it is a novel means to allow some customisation to the speaker and charge extra money for new covers. But the included handle on the side of the unit is a decent addition if you need to carry or move the speaker around. This becomes especially useful because of the speaker’s 10 hour inbuilt battery (i’ve only used for a couple of hours so can’t vouch for the 10 hour claim). The sound quality is good and the volume is both easy to control and can get very loud. The little touchscreen panel atop the speaker is easy to use once you know how – thankfully there are instructions included and readily available online too. The one slight drawback on the touchscreen panel is the lack of brightness control, as it does have a tendency to be a tad too bright when in a dark room.

Comments from buyers

“Very pleased, better than I expected, Fantastic flexibility but dodgy on wifi, Really great sound! Still some software bugs to fix soon :)”

Great speaker with good sound let down by flaky app. . Great speaker, really good sound and a lovely design, great packaging and easy to follow instructions. Good battery life and easy to charge. Easy to link via bluetooth to pc and phone. App (android running on samsung s6) is very unstable and repeatedly crashed/failed making linking the speaker to the wifi network extremely challenging and cannot access deeper controls on speaker sound profiles. Numerous reviews on google play store about poor app and no resolution insight from libratone. Speaker is extremely responsive and has great bass tones with good high notes without being tinny. The speaker is extremely good and i’ve almost no faults with it at all apart from the lack of brightness of the control ‘bird’ which is hard to see when in direct light. I can’t test the rest of the offering as the app won’t work for me yet.

My (almost) constant companion. Wasn’t really sure about this when i first saw the product, and i was even less keen having read other reviews, but this is probably the most used gadget in my home after my iphone. Seriouslyi use the libratone zipp mini when i wake up, immediately connecting to my iphone so i can listen to music as i get ready for the day. It hangs on my door handle in my room when not in use, gets carried to the bathroom door handle, as i shower, comes back into the bedroom as i dress, and then downstairs to the kitchen for breakfast. As i leave the house, it hands on the closet door handle, where it is retrieved when i return home, and eventually makes it way back upstairs to the bedroom. And, yes, it is used when i’m reading in bed at night, too. It really is just that portable and the sound carries well in even room without distortion. I have a feeling it will travel with me, on those occasions i don’t wish to wear a headset. I am considering purchasing a second one to create that ‘stereo’ sound i’ve seen other reviewers mention, for my living room. The libratone zipp mini was so easy to set up, i didn’t even need instructions.

Good – but nowhere near as good as the old original zipp. . I owned the original zipp and loved it – spectacularly bright natural sound for all kinds of music, including classical. Very loud, great bass, amazingly clear treble. I gave it away when the new model came out, under the assumption that this new model (zipp 2015) could only be better. Sadly i was wrong – almost to the point of wanting to return it. The bass is still strong and impressive, but the amazing tweeters have been downgraded from the stunning ribbon tweeters to more traditional units – and the high-end clarity is now quite mediocre – none of the lovely clarity and realism of the original model. It sounds ‘closed in’ rather than open and bright. Also it’s overall not as loud as the previous model, despite the on-paper-claimed increase in wattage. I would have recommended the old model to anyone to buy without bothering to demo – but i would not recommend this one unless you give it a good try and like it. Seems like libratone (now bought out by a larger company apparently) have lost their way and don’t give sound quality the high priority they did before.

Full 360 sound and portable. This is bigger than i thought from the picture on amazon but it is still a compact and portable speaker – and as it’s rechargeable it really is portable. What i love about this speaker:* it has a rich sound that belies its size. It can handle all sorts of music (from dance to rock to pop to classical) and do the music justice, too. There is no distortion, and you can select different ‘modes’ to best suit the music. * its round design means that it does give a 360 sound, so it’s brilliant for putting on a table or partition wall or something and filling a room in all directions with equal sound. I’ve had round speakers before but the fact this is cylindrical helps to amplify the sound in all directions, i feel. * it’s customisable in terms of the settings can be changed to suit its positioning (e. Is it on a table or on a bookshelf)* it is really intuitive to use. A nifty feature is that if you want to mute the sound you just put your hand over the top of the speaker and the sound fades out immediately – remove your hand, music resumes at the previous volume. Such a simple but handy feature* with it being connected to wifi, you don’t suffer from connection drop out between phone and speaker if you dare to move the phone too far away from it (as opposed to those with bluetooth connection)there isn’t really anything i didn’t like. If i had to be picky, i’d say perhaps the set up was a bit fiddly, but as long as you download the app and follow the instructions it isn’t any more convoluted than other tech items around the home nowadays. I guess i could handle it if it gave a bit more volume but we all know it isn’t good for us, anyway.

I have tried many airplay/bluetooth speakers over the last couple of years. From bose, philips, pioneer, ihome and anker to name the best. However this zipp mini i just bought for our kitchen is the best by an absolute mile. It is amazing is so many waysi like to use airplay as i like to use the whaale app to stream to multiple rooms so having an airplay speaker is my preference. The zipps airplay functionality is fantastic. Nice touches like being able to play when speaker is in standby means you never have to touch it. You can control it from your iphone. I’ve had no problems with jumpy playback as some people have said. I would put those symptoms down to a poor wifi signal or a poor quality router that can’t handle the data streams.

A capable speaker let down by execution. Firstly, i have to say, this is beautifully packaged. It feels like an apple product when unboxing and really sets you up to expect quality. Even the power charger is lovely- see enclosed photos. As products go, it does not get much better than this as a first impression. Once inside the box, the speaker itself is lifted out. This is not unmanageable but prevents it from being totally portable. The dial on the top is lovely, as is reminiscent of an early ipod click dial (including the early white).

With the speaker on the landing window it fills the whole house with beautiful beautiful sound the app was easy enough to setup. Definitely a nervous buy with this, after reading all the mixed reviews i wasnt sure what to expectpleasantly surprised by the quality of the sound from this speaker. I live in a 3 bed new build house, with the speaker on the landing window it fills the whole house with beautiful beautiful soundthe app was easy enough to setup, doesnt get a 5 star because the app isnt as responsive as you would expect (well we are all spoilt by how quickly modern phones/tablets respond etc)would definitley recommend this over the sonos or bose speakers if only for the fact that it doesnt need mains powerblasted music for my nye party for 4-5 hours straight :).

A very loud wireless speaker in such a small form + good quality sound + some elegant design touches. I have tried a good number of wireless speakers in recent years by makers including bose, sony, loewe and others. This libratone zipp mini probably ranks amongst my top 2 wireless speakers. I think it delivers excellent quality sound in an attractive package with some nifty features that help to turn it into a luxury item that is quite fun and pleasing to own. I’ll break my review down into things i like and then things i like less. Things i like* the first thing you notice is that this speaker can get loud. In fact, i was surprised at how loud the zipp mini gets. Compared to several other wireless speakers at around the same price point, i think the zipp mini produces the highest volumes. Of course, it is important that there is no distortion at high volumes and i was pleasantly surprised to find that there was no distortion at all. On some other speakers at a similar price point (and made by very high-end brands), there can often be some distortion in the quality of sound as you get to the very loudest levels that a speaker is able to produce.

Highly recommended for sound quality and output capability. . Wifi is the way to go – no more connectivity issues if you dare to move too far from the source. This thing is superb, puts out a high quality sound at high volume with decent bass. Far better than the ue offerings and amazing value for money given the quality and watts. You can link up to 7 together and i am planning an expansion. It is quite heavy for it’s size so not something you’d leave the house with regularly so be sure to read the dimensions / weight before deciding if this is for you. For plonking down around the house / garden/ car / friends house it is fab. Absolutely delighted with this kit. I am quite hard to please (polite version) and yet here i am taking the time for once to post a review.

Good speakers but not so good. I bought a libratone zipp and 2 x zipp mini speakers a few months ago and although are great speakers, the sound is loud and clear with very little distortion. I tend to leave my speakers on and plugged all the time and only use the battery mode when i’m in the garden or when i am going to be in a room where i have no speakers (i. The kitchen)you can set up 5 favourite internet stations per speaker, change the speaker’s sounds settings through the app, there is even a hush option (you can mute the speaker by putting your hand on top of the touch interface of the speaker. You can use the speaker to charge your phone, but i wouldn’t rely too much on this as it does so very slowly. You can link the speakers together and have a stereo option through the app. However beware that sometimes when listening internet radio in stereo mode, one of the speakers tends to have a little delay. The zipp is obviously louder than the zipp mini, but to my liking, the mini’s have better sound. In summary, looks good, sounds great and it is very portablethe app is laggy and can take a long times to find the sound spaces and won’t always find all 3 speakers.

These speakers are so good i have now bought two of them and get beautiful stereo sound when linked.

The quality is very good but above all the sound is excellent. The customer services is also very good as i needed there help. If you buy it, you will not regret.

Sound, user interface and designif i could i would give it 10 stars.

Great sounding mini speaker packed with features. Lots of features and it’s portable. The base is a little weak for my liking but then again there is no distortion and sound sent in all directions. It’s the size of a jbl speaker. Update may 2016 – bass has improved over the months. Need to wear it in to get the best sound.

A high specced speaker with interesting expansion features and great sound. This is a really attractive speaker to start with and has a variety of replaceable colour cover options available to suit your room colour. It also has a beautiful sound, the 360 degree sound is a great effect and, although the single speaker is obviously mono, multiple speakers can be linked to give stereo playback. The white vinyl base of the speaker has a usb-a socket, a 3. 5mm input jack socket, power socket and the power button. On the top is a nice multi function touch button with the nightingale logo, skip back/forward, a soundspace button to link your speakers and a favourites button to select stored radio stations. Radio station selection and volume are selected by anti/clockwise rotation around the edge of the button. Tapping the button pause the music and tapping again restarts, covering the button cuts the volume, but not instantly, which is a nuisance. Once configured onto your network casting to this device, from say media player, spotify (premium) or other dlna servers is simple and seems to work very well. There is also the other option of bluetooth 4.

This is a great solution in the crossover of both. If you consider wifi speakers and bluetooth speakers as separate sets, this is a great solution in the crossover of both. That venn diagram set is quite small if you want home speakers that operate on wifi and allow zoning as well as being able to grab one and head off to the beach with it using your phone to drive it on bluetooth. The sound is great and i got a few admiring comments but i have a suspicion the bose soundlink is louder and better (but believe it doesn’t sync with other speakers or operate on apple airplay). I reckon sonos is better at home too – from sound and power point of view – but sonos aren’t a portable solution. My only gripe is that to take advantage of multiple speakers at home, the price is pretty prohibitive.

This product was provided free for review and i have to admit that initially it seemed quite overpriced. However, i love itit comes presented in a stylish cylindrical box. It looks top quality and i love teal, red and white colour-way. There is a leather wrist strap for portability. The radio stations are fine, but i use it mostly to stream imusic and play itunes. I downloaded the app and connected to wi-fi to play the radio, then paired my iphone (5s) with bluetooth through the settings. It occasionally needs re-pairing (mainly because i have several bluetooth devices), but i have found it problem free. The sound is great, although not as immersive as surround sound.
