For the price and size, this is an excellent portable bluetooth speaker. It’s on sale at prices between £35 and £65, so shop around. The solid construction and downward-facing bass port add depth to the sound, and it can also be connected by a supplied short lead to your music source which saves battery at both ends.
The speaker itself is a great little speaker for the price. The problem is charging it-the adapter doesn’t fit properly in the micro usb slot, it seems loose and i thought it was just mine but looking at some other reviews, it seems to be a common problem. I can usually only get it to charge by jamming it up against a wall and putting something heavy against the speaker but it’s recently stopped charging altogether. It’s a really unfortunate flaw because the speaker itself is great but actually the charging problem is so damn frustrating that i would avoid buying it.
I’ve enjoyed my kitsound hive for a long time now, i can’t think of a better bluetooth speaker in terms of sound quality and my non-bose budget. I love having this second speaker to hand, my only gripe is that every time you switch on the kitsound hive x and connect, the default volume on playback is very very loud (in comparison, my kitsound hive remembers my previous volume setting no problem). I’ve checked with the manufacturer and this is something that is hard wired in, so be aware.

“Excellent portable audio solution, Great value, great sound!, Nice sound and design – dreadful packaging”
My daughter is a pt instructor so needs a great quality sound, she is over the moon with the whole package. Very solid sturdy speaker with an amazing sound even when played loudly she previously used beats and said this system is just as good for a fraction of the price.
The sound quality is surprisingly good, if your looking for a good sound and nothing fancy that looks somewhat decent from about 1m distance, this is for you. But the build quality could be better. Also had to replace one of these, since it just died on me after about 3 weeks use on a desk. The replacement they sent also has some build issues:the bottom bass radiator cover looks really dodgy (check the picture),the grill had some paint chipped in a tiny area, regardless – very annoying (probably fixable w/ permanent marker),the usb micro port also misaligned. Don’t get me wrong – it was new, in a sealed box, but i had a feeling that they’ve sent me a refurb :d maybe it is, don’t know. But for the price, it does a lot for me. If they would make a version somewhat as portable and with better build quality, maybe even more bass and mids – i’d buy it again.
Bought for hubby to take to yard and use in shed. Best gift everso easy to set up and good hardy design. I’ve put one on my santa list for me.
I was very sceptical about the hive 2, as i had been looking at meany other brands to. I’m very glad i chose this model as i didn’t want to spend over £30 but have a good quality product. It sound amazing a is just what i needs for moving it around the house. I would definitely recommend this 100% .
I’ve heard good sound quality from small speakers like bose, but at a price. I am amazed at the sound from this tiny, inexpensive unit. Rich base, delicate trebles, you can hear every finger pluck on a guitar. When it was first unpacked, naturally it needed charging. The initial charge took about 6 hours, not the 4 claimed. Bluetooth connected flawlessly to both my ipads, and i am now, via the ipads, able to stream music wirelessly from my imac computer in another room. The volume is more than adequate for an average room. Just a tip – if you use an ipad or similar, disable the keyboard clicks from your tablet or else it sounds through the speakers.
Pure quality sound from my ipad,2nd version, first one lasted a few years before the socket lead ‘fell in’so i bought a replacementi am very happy with the new version.
A brilliant mid range option with good sound quality and volume range. I’ve not been disappointed and would recommend to all who want to take the melody with them without hitting the wallet to hard.
Absolutely love these speakers. My friend had his similar bose speakers with him and i did a comparison between the two. Honestly, the sound is clearer within the kitsound hive speakers and the bass pump is so good for such a size. The price is superb and you get more than what you pay for quality wise. Do not be afraid to buy it, the biggest difference i felt between the two speakers were that the bose speakers had a slightly (very unnoticable) stronger bass kick and the grip within ks when you place it on the table could be a bit better when on full volume, because on heavier bass tracks it starts moving a bit. But that is not a big problem in my opinion. You save a fortune and get excellent quality.
Excellent for what it is, sound quality is great as long as your expectations are realistic. Obviously a portable speaker of this size is never going to sound like a proper hi-fi, it’s not something i’d recommend as your only source of audio at home. However, this is great as a portable unit that’s good for camping trips, hotels, out in the garden etc or just as a quick and easy boost to the audio output of a laptop. I’ve previously used the popular x-mini speakers and, in volume terms, this sounds roughly comparable to two of those daisy chained together but the sound quality of the hive is better and whereas the x-minis tend to bounce around all over the place and fall over this is much more stable. The ‘passive bass radiator’ on the bottom actually does seem to help extend the bottom end a bit, particularly if the speaker is placed on a hard surface and the bass response is pretty good (again – if you’re realistic about what can be achieved at this size and price). I’ve had no problems with the bluetooth but i do tend to use the 3. 5mm stereo jack more often simply because it uses less battery power both on the speaker and on whatever device i’m using to play music from. The battery life is excellent too, i’ve certainly had more than the advertised 10 hours out of a full charge when connected through the jack input. For about a quarter of the price of a bose soundlink mini you can’t go wrong.
Out of both hive speakers, hive 1 and 2, i prefer the hive 1. To me they both have the excellent sound, just feel as though they have just added extra buttons to the hive 2. . So not sure if its really an upgrade or not.
My car stereo broke due to loom problems so was stuck driving a car with no music, so decided to invest in the hive 2 so i could bluetooth music from my phone. It works brilliantly, it just sits on my dashboard pumping out music, and when im parked up i just slip it into my pocket and away we go. An excellent speaker for under £50. Has some weight to it too so you know it has excellent build quality.
This speaker is pretty amazing in almost every way. Never run out of battery on me when i was using (though i do take care to charge between uses, where possible), have had it for around 2 years and it is still going strong. Only things that could be stronger is the power / bass, as i previously owned an anker speaker that was around the same size but performed quite a lot better in these areas.
When i open the box, i am surprised by the quality of the speaker and all the assessors that comes with the speaker. The speaker comes with a pouch for carrying the speaker around, a 3. 5mm aux cable to connect to device that do not have bluetooth connection, a micro-usb cable for charging the speaker. As i like to listen to music and watching movies a lot, i always wanted to have a high quality speaker to replace my laptop’s crappy speaker. The hive is an excellent speaker, it is very loud and it does not change the audio quality a lot when the volume is turned to the highest. Although, the hive does a good job with high volume, when the volume is low, there is a ‘windy’ noise as if there is a breeze blowing in the background. The sound quality is astounding, it has very good base and treble, so it is perfect for any music genre. Compared to other portable speaker around this price range, the hive must be the top of them all. I have been using this speaker every day since i bought it, i only need to charge it every 3-4 day, the battery was amazingly good, it can last for a very long time without needed to charge it.
The sound is great for the price, quite a but of bass and mid range is good for this type of small speaker, quite a full sound for a tiny box. Feels nice, and very simple to use/connect as long as you don’t have an iphone4 like me, i use a wire for that but connects with ipad and androids fine. The packaging is completely over the top. Plastic box and taped weird places to cardboard, on a par with printer ink blister packs, why do they do it?.A complete nightmare so if you are thinking of trying it before you give it away as a present, forget it. You will destroy the packaging getting into it and then will have to keep it. So this one is mine now despite wanting to gift it. If they did a redesign on the packaging it would be great, it needs to be more environmentally friendly and customer friendly.
Small with a nice rubberised finish. Sound quality comfortably exceeds computer or phone speakers, but obviously not anway near hifi standard. A couple of niggles, there is some extraneous noise when music isn’t playing but is not obvious when music is playing. The other issue is that if you have more than one device paired it holds the pairing after the first device is shut down and refuses to connect to the second device. The first device has to be manually disconnected. This happens both on my speaker and my son in law’s. He in fact was on the verge of returning it as technical help at kitsound thought there was a defect.
For the price an amazing bit of kit sounds good and looks good. Volume good enough to house work and work from home too. Rubber pads sotp anoooying vibrations.
This really is a great bit of kit () especially considering the cheap price. It’s really solid with a nice smooth texture and quite a weight to it – if certainly feels very well made and seems much more expensive than it is. It’s also really easy to use, pairing is a breeze especially with nfc and unlike some bluetooth devices it just works first time every time. The controls are solid, easy to use and allow skipping of tracks, volulme control, play/pause and also works with a phone call. The aux socket is a welcome addition for devices that don’t have bluetooth, or for quick playback from a friends phone for example. I’ve yet to run the battery down, but i used it for a good 5 or 6 hours and the battery status led has still not gone to red which means it’s less than 30% so the stated playback time of 12 hours seems feasible. Then of course there’s the sound, which lets face it is all you really want to know – for the size it’s by far the best sounding device i’ve heard. It’s quite loud, crystal clear at all volumes and has surprisingly punchy bass along with clear higher notes without sounding tinny or otherwise washed out. It copes well with almost all kinds of music i’ve tried including heavy rock/metal, generic pop and classical, as well as voice and/or youtube type videos. It’s never going to compete with a proper speaker, but it’s easily as good as similar devices that cost 2 or even 3 times as much.
This bluetooth speaker is great. The sound is amazing for a speaker that small and it can be quite loud at max volume. It’s quite heavy so it feels sturdy and won’t move from where you put it. The battery life is really good too. I’ve had it for ~3 months now and i had to charge it once even though i use it almost everyday for ~20 minutes. The only reason i’m not giving it 5 star is that there’s quite a bit of static noise at low volumes. It was quite bad with my galaxy s3, but even with a more recent phone (htc one m8), there’s still some static. Once you turn the volume up it’s better but it might be more annoying if you listen to quieter music. All around, it’s great and for the price, i can’t ask for a lot more.
Sound good and battery life good. Left outside whilst mowing the lawn and forget it. Rained that night and speaker did not survive. Looks water resistant but not. Have replaced with one to better suit my forgetfulness.
Although we have a dab radio in the kitchen it does not have any way of playing from other sources. So we decided to get a bluetooth speaker. The sound coming out of this device belies its diminutive size. It’s easy to pair with devices and pushes out a remarkable clear, bassy and wide sound. The battery life is good too.
Got this for hubby and the sound is absolutely amazing. It’s really quite small and easy to carry and you can’t believe the volume or sound quality. My only complaint is that when i want to use it (note that it’s for hubby, so he’s the main user) i have to pair it each time which is annoying.
