B&O PLAY by Bang & Olufsen BeoPlay A1 Ultra-Portable Rechargeable tooth Wireless Speaker, This Bluetooth speaker has blown me away.

To sum up in just one word, absolutely brilliant if you want two words. If i could give this 7 stars i would do so. This is the best tech gadget i have had in a very long time. First the introduction, the beoplay comes nicely packaged and is supplied with a very small multi language instruction book and a metre long usb cable. The beoplay fits neatly in the hand and is a nice weight (600g). The build quality is first class, the construction is from aluminium and on a personal note i like the moss green colour as well. To charge just plug in the usb lead and it takes 3 hours for the full monty. (mine came well charged out of the box).

Great sound great quality but gets hot in use. As this is the third product b&o i knew i was going to receive high quality sound and well-made product which indeed i have but this item does seem to get very hot in use to the point of it being uncomfortable if you do hold it now you’re not necessarily always going to hold in your hand but my concern is that the battery is getting too hot and i could pose a problem i’ve already put the question to the people that have purchased this ready on amazon if i get no response i am then going to contact b&o to ask them the same question as i’m not entirely sure this should be happening please don’t let this put you off it’s a fantastic product and the only reason it didn’t get five stars is because of the heat.

I’ve had this product for a few months now and positives are: sound is great for the size, battery life really good, easy to connect on bluetooth. Negatives are: i find the controls quite fiddly – there are tiny symbols printed on the sides which let you know where to turn it on or adjust volume etc but i have to pick it up and search to find the one i want, also because of the upward facing design i found the surface you put it on made a difference to the sound. I’d like to make clear that the positives far outweigh the negatives hence the 5 stars and a recommendation from me.

“Stylish portable speaker with a lovely clear sound, Great sound for the size, Absolutely amazing – how do B&O do it?!”

Nearly £200 is a lot of money for a compact bluetooth speaker but not a lot for something from bang & olufsen so this is tricky to value for review purposes. The packaging is suitably premium and the unit is supplied with a usb to usb-c charging cable, a rather hard to follow multi-language instruction booklet and a leather hanging strap attached. Green may not be my choice of colour but it looks very well made with a top made out of metal alloy and a rubberised plastic base. The speaker is approximately the circumference of a cd/dvd and about 2 inches tall so it is portable but you are not going to be able to slip it into the pocket of your jeans and it has some real weight to it coming in at 600 grammes. It is very stylish and minimalist with no obvious buttons until you notice the symbols around the base. There are flush buttons to turn the unit on, adjust the volume and select functions but a hard to find and fiddly to use, a definite case of form over function. The unit is compatable with the b&o play app which apparently allows you to activate your most recently played music at launch, personalise your listening experience and use two units to set up (a very expensive) wireless stereo pairing. I was not able to test this as the android app has not been launched and the ios version was not in the apple store for my ipad 3rd gen, usually a sign of incompatabilty despite it running the latest version of ios 9. As this is pre-launch i have ignored this in the rating though.

Terrific sound, below average battery performance. Considering the size of the speaker, the sound is amazingly powerful and bass is taut. The b&o play app for android is easy to use. I bought two units and pairing was speedy. I noticed that there were owners who reported that it was a pain to use the app though. As regard to battery life claims, international consumer research and testing (icrt) (international-testing. Org) recently tested many wireless speakers including this beoplay a1. It was revealed that the battery life of the samples icrt members bought in the market lasted for only 6 hours at reasonable listening level. Charge time was tested 4 hours.

Rather than faff about with halfords and fitting an in car system we use this to stream music whilst travelling which it is excellent at. Loud and clear and because it is portable we then also have the option to use elsewhere whilst out and about and usefully, to improve poor quality tv audio.

Great sound from such a small speaker. Excellent bluetooth speaker. Great sound for such a small portable speaker. Can be placed on a flat surface or hung in any room. As always with b & o you get what you pay for.

This speaker will amaze you. Trust me when i say, this beautiful little speaker sounds amazing. The bose mini was my favourite for the last 2 years. If your like me and don’t know whether to go for this little gem, i couldn’t recommend this speaker enough. Once you here it you will be blown away, i was. It really packs a punch for it’s size and also nice and loud. When you hold this speaker for the first time you won’t believe the sound that comes out of it. It’s my first b&o product and i am very happy with my purchase. I know it doesn’t have the best battery life out of all portable speakers but when you hear it and your like me, you won’t care. Anyway a simple fix is a portable battery charger and your good to go. Very portable, beautiful build, sounds incredible.Highly recommend (update) after using this speaker now for a few weeks, i’d like to add that this speaker does get hot at the bass, like make you want to turn it down hot.

Superb, if heavy and expensive. . Portable bluetooth speakers these days tend to me light and cheap, and this model from b&o is neither of those things. However, it remains a contender for the title of best bluetooth single speaker available thanks to the justifiably legendary b&o acoustics and the clever design touches. The sound quality is not easily describable; if you’ve ever heard any kind of b&o audio device, it will be sufficient to know that this is recognisably a b&o. In terms of design, the leather bootlace hanging strap is beautiful and inspired. The speaker controls take unobtrusiveness to an entirely new level and do not break the smooth lines of the device. If money were no object and if weight were not a factor in portability, this would have five stars. But in the end those things are pretty important, so it’s four.

Sound-5, design-5, battery-4 and price-4*. Very good sound (both with hi-res audio and mp3) and best when hanging on the wall to fill the room. Nice design, feels strong and solid. Bt good but didn’t test the range. Connects and works fine with macbook pro, iphone, sony walkman a15 but not with my sony android tv 2015 (probably tv bt soft issue). Battery lasts fine but definitely much less than promised 24h on medium volume. Sadly no wall charger for this price. Generally happy after 7 weeks of usage.

Absolutely amazing – how do b&o do it?. Having various b&o products at home (phones, avant tv, beoplay, h8 headphones, speakers, even their first mp3 player) i just couldn’t resist the a1. How they can get the sound quality and directional depth from something so small is incredible. Beautifully designed and made as with all b&o it is simple to operate and connect via bluetooth and, having tested it in various locations around the house and outside and on different surfaces including hanging against a wall and free hanging, the sound quality is superb. Have tried it with jazz, pop and classical and it flatters all genres. Just great when out for a day for a picnic or lounging in the garden. I haven’t noticed the base getting hot as reported by some reviewers but then i have only been playing it at mid volume and for about an hour at a time, perhaps if i make it work harder it will get hot (after all i would).

Excellent sound quality, small enough to be easily portable, and can’t quite believe how rich the sound is from this little speaker. Definitely recommended if you want to spend this much.

Great sound for size, very short battery life when played loud. Overall i love the sound and tone of this speaker – i’d describe it as refined. Treble is very clear, precise, and omni-directional thanks to the design, and the strap lets you hang it for best sound. Bass goes very low, (rolls off gradually down to 40hz) and is astounding for the size of the unit, especially if you put it in a corner. I don’t usually notice but on the odd track a couple of mid tones are strangely absent. The beoplay app has a crude tone control that can change the sound to a limited degree for ios/android devices linked by bluetooth, but not when connected via aux. I have an original mains – supplied bose sound dock that can play much louder with louder bass, but the bass actually doesn’t reach quite as low as the a1. This is amazing considering that the a1 is much smaller and battery powered. In comparison to the a1 the bose sounds generally more mushy. The a1 can play surpisingly loudly for its size but there is a trade off – battery life is very short at or near max volume – not much over an hour of bass-heavy music.

I can’t quite believe that such a small speaker can produce such quality, clear sound and at quite a volume. If i was to be picky, i would say that the advertising description is a little untrue in terms of the size – it says that it ‘fits in the palm of a hand’; maybe other people have larger hands but while you could easily hold and carry it, it would not fit within your palm. It is about the size of a side plate. But this is rather pedantic. I don’t care what size it is and whether it fits in the palm of a hand or not – the truth is that the sound is superb, it is fairly light and portable. The instruction manual is very small and if truth be told, not terribly illuminating as it is succinct to the nth degree; however, the product is simple to use and you won’t need the instruction manual. It connects quickly via bluetooth – just hold the clearly marked bluetooth button for two seconds. I think the only thing i would like to see them improve (but it’s not a big enough niggle to remove a star) would be to supply a plug; it comes with a usb lead for charging and a good old fashioned plug would be more convenient.

Excellent piece of equipment. It is light and compact and the quality of the sound is superb and sounds like it is coming from a top of the range hi-fi. I’d definitely recommend this for playing your music from you phone around a pool laying in the sunshine with a cool beer.

This bluetooth speaker has blown me away. . For a long time now i have been a fan of bluetooth speakers in both portable and mains-powered forms. They make it so simple to connect a portable device such as a smartphone or tablet that it is hard not to be impressed, and it gives the freedom to move around whilst still using the device to play music. This one from bang & olufsen is a surprisingly attractive speaker; it definitely creates a very good first impression with a high quality feel to it right from the start including some decent packaging. From the description i had imagined it to be plain-looking but this really looks the part. It’s also very well made and has a reassuring weight to it which helps it to sit firmly on a surface with no noticeable vibration even when that surface is solid and i’m playing loud or deep-toned music. The packaging states that it was designed in denmark and made in china. One strange concern that i do have is about the shape of this speaker. Personally, i like to take a portable bluetooth speaker with me when i travel (including abroad) but i am slightly worried that the round shape and size of this one from b&o might look quite bomb-like when viewed with x-ray at airport security. However, the speaker does feature a smart leather loop with a b&o tag which allows easy carrying once you have made it to your destination.

Nice product design but lacking bass punch and battery life. Well designed product with good, analytical sound; could do with a bit more punch from the bass frequencies. Battery life nowhere near the advertised 24 hours though – more like 8 hours at medium volume.

Absolutely stunning speaker with a beautiful and powerful sound. I can’t fault the beoplay a1 at all. Not sure on the battery life as i have this permanently plugged in in the bedroom but would highly recommend for the looks and sound alone.

Stylish portable speaker with a lovely clear sound. It has been really interesting being given such a lovely piece of kit to play with. I didn’t find it quite as portable as it suggests in the advertising – its about 12. 5cm across and 4cm deep and weighs approx. 575g but it is a very portable speaker. I took it on the eurostar and it came up on the scanner and i had to have my baggage searched but it was allowed through. It did take me a moment to get to grips with the on/off, bluetooth connectivity buttons and they do seem to be switches of some sort under a smooth flexible skin. The manual was tiny but very straightforward – i was amazed – so many manuals are awful – but pleased. You need something that is bluetooth enabled to play music. I have been using my laptop and my amazon music library and my phone.

Got to hear it to believe it. The sound in a speaker this size is absolute mind-blowing. Not something i’ve heard before from any of the other bluetooth speakers i have used. Quality is clear with a great bass undertone that doesn’t distort even at it’s loudest setting. Battery life is also amazing and the looks. It’s b&o what to you expect. Yes it’s not the cheapest but in this case you truly get what you pay for. If you can listen to it first i suggest you do it and i’m sure you won’t be able to wait for this little gem for 24 hours. The only thing i wish they would have added at this price is a pouch so that it’s less likely to scratch when you put it in a bag. I’m using an old headphones pouch but i’m sure b&o could have added it in the box at virtually no cost to them. This little speaker is going to get a few travel miles this summer.

By far the product of the season. You get a wow everytime you turn it on.

Great sound from such a small speaker. Excellent bluetooth speaker. Great sound for such a small portable speaker. Can be placed on a flat surface or hung in any room. As always with b & o you get what you pay for.
