Bang & Olufsen B&O PLAY by Beoplay A2 Active Bluetooth Speaker – Stone Grey, Sounds amazing with both Metallica and Rachmaninov at low and high

Very happy with the sound quality it would be five stars if the battery just lasted a little longer when the volume was higher offer than that excellent product.

Well worth the £99 prime day offer price.

Excellent speaker though the battery performance doesn’t satisfy me.

“A brilliant unit and sounds better than the Bose – and that’s coming from a Bose fan!
, Great speaker, but it’s little brother, a1, has similar performance
, Sounds amazing with both Metallica and Rachmaninov at low and high

Incredible sound (just don’t bother with the app on the android market though).

Great speaker,excellent quality.

The sound quality from this speaker is exceptional; it is even better if you have a second a2 as you can pair them left and right. It is easily to set up and use, and the iphone app is useful (it’s the same app for other beoplay devices). The one thing that lets it down is the battery and charging: at higher volumes the battery drains quickly; keeping it connected to power helps but still isn’t perfect. For my purposes this isn’t a deal breaker, but for some who might want to use this for extended period this would be an issue. Despite the battery issue i think the sound quality, ease of use and robust build quality still justify giving this 5* – just.

This is the ‘dual sided’ speaker and throws high quality deep rich sound all over the roomif you are belting the tunes out at higher volumes then dont expect the battery to last the stated duration but thats to be expectedperfect for those garden parties/bbq’s.

Great b&o build quality and a depth of sound hard to match. Very long battery life and practical design and i liked the carrying strap in particular. Suitable for all types of music with great depth of sound including very impressive bass and clear mid tones and treble. Charges quickly and lasts up to 20 hours of use. Easy to connect with simple bluetooth pairing or direct connection. My only concern is the stability of the unit – it has to be played standing up and if jolted at all it falls over or off the unit it is standing on. Be warned – put it somewhere it can’t fall off. If using outdoors or in a humid or damp environment, the active version is essential as it is dust and moisture resistant. Highly recommended speaker and although the price puts it in the expensive category once the pain of buying it fades the quality will last and you will not regret the purchase.

When on the lookout for a bt speaker i tried loads of units in my local john lewis and curries including the popular multicoloured units and the bose too. This b&o unit sounded so much more refined without the harshness of the bose or the heavy bass from so many other units. The issues that some may have had regarding volume are probably due to not charging adequately as this unit is clever enough to reduce the volume as the battery gets low. Not only does this tell you to put it on charge but it also extends the listening pleasure although not sure if you can turn this feature off or not. Maybe a bit annoying if you only want a short duration at higher volumes. It pairs easily and always reconnects. Uses the new usb3 connector and comes with a charging cable (no charger though so you need to use an existing usb charger). Really pleased and would recommend.

Nice compact speaker with a great sound only the battery lasts around 5 to 6 hours not the 24 as stated.

As you’d expect from b&o the sound is awesome. It’s up there with the best, and possibly the best. I have tried the p6 too and it is probably marginally better. But you can pick these up for £130 or so on ebay or from amazon warehouse deals – at that price i’m not sure the a2 can be beaten?but the absolute winner for me is usb charging. As most people probably do, i use these when travelling. And i being able to charge it with the same usb chargers i have for other devices is great. With previous speakers like the dali katch and bose speakers i’ve have had to bring a seperate charger just for the speaker, and this is annoying.

This review concerns the b&o play by bang & olufsen beoplay a2 active bluetooth speaker – stone grey, price at review £299. This is a truly amazing, portable quality speaker system with excellent, fully variable tonal range. Set-up via the beoplay app took less than 30 seconds. In addition to initial bluetooth set-up the app also includes the variable tone and volume control plus previous / next track selection. The speaker unit itself, about the size of a paperback book is reasonably heavy but conversely not overweight. Ideal for use around the home, or in our case it will easily fit into baggage and provide first class, audio output whilst in our hotel rooms. This is truly one piece of technology that works straight out of the box and delivers amazing output. Everything about thus unit has been extremely well thought out, from the minimalist design to the fully functional ios app. Included in the nice presentation case is a second, hand strap plus the usb charging lead and the small four-step set-up card.

Battery life is very poor, not what it says it does, doesn’t last up to an hour at half of the volume. Very poor battery life and takes long time to get fully charged.

B&o at its best, providing sound that the artist intended. Just pure crystal clear sound. If you want added bass, move the speaker to an enclosed area or next to a wall and the bass will amplify. Not too heavy and easily portable.

I have listened to a wide range of bluetooth speakers right up to the dali katch. The latter was a real disappointment and lacked clarity and sparkle at low volume. Similar to a jbl charge 3 only the dk would go much louder. It sounds clearly a class above the jbl as well as being much more of a shear pleasure to listen to than the dk. The low volume bass is slightly weak however thus the 4 stars. You can make up for this using an equaliser but why should you have to. My recommendation across the price range is jam heavy metal in the budget range. It really is a mini beoplay a2. Don’t waste your time with anything else.

As to be expected from a quality brand, very high finish quality, seems very durable, easy to pair and use, no connectivity issues.

Bought as a christmas gift for my husband and was really worried after reading reviews about the battery life however my hilysband was absolutely thrilled with it. Sound is amazing and no issues with battery while we have used it over christmas.

This b & o portable bluetooth speaker has to be one of the best on the market today. It is well built, like all b & o products and it was very easy to set up. I have used many portable bluetooth speaker systems, especially when going on holiday and i can honestly say that this system is by far the best i have ever had. The reproduction of sound is first class and the size of the speaker is ideal for portability. I know that family and friends will be impressed with this speaker and i am sure that they will want one. If you want to spoil someone, this would make the ideal present.

I am crazy about products of b&o, especially its speakers.

I’ve been on the lookout for a portable bluetooth speaker for some time and could never find one i was completely satisfied with. Then along came the beoplay a2 activethis is a first rate portable speaker:- it sounds fantastic, producing a tremendous amount of rich, distortion-free bass for such a small speaker- the sound from both sides of the speaker produces enough volume to fill a room making it great for parties- it is dust and splash proof (i use it in the kitchen and outside all the time with no issues)- it is a good looking piece of kit and has great build quality, feeling sturdy and reassuringly weighty in the hand- it has a long battery life that recharges quickly via usb-cthe biggest compliment i can give the beoplay a2 active is that i use it everyday.

Works very well with all my devices and looks great.

Only had it 1/2 hour and absolutely blown away by it. Tech spec says 180w peak – using class d amp – which is highly power efficient. No less than 6 speakers inside – 2 passive for bass. Sounds amazing with both metallica and rachmaninov at low and high volumes. Deep, rich, uncoloured sound. A big improvement over bose soundlink 2s which are very bass-heavy, and i have had 2 that have gone wrong i am sorry to say. Take note that in other reviews someone advised to ‘run in’ these speakers before best performance is achieved. If significant change after a month of use i will report back.

The b&o play a2 active offered to me by vine has a surprisingly pleasing sound with reasonable low bass and clean top and plenty of volume, especially when considering how small the unit is. I can almost believe the claimed power ratings on the product description. It is not true hifi, and i can hear it becoming non-linear in the louder passages when its volume is turned up, and of course it is only mono. Stereo requires two of these units. The controls are simpleon/off button, press for on, long press for off- + rocker button, adjust the volume level from off to very loud, with a lot of presses for fine controlpairing button, different length press times are significantthere are three possible results from operating the pairing button. Simple one-to-one mono with the host. Press the button once for more than two seconds to tell the host device it is available, indicator flashing blue, and then the host can list it ready to be selected; select it and job done, ready to go. Stereo (a second unit is also needed).

Got it as an upgrade for my a1. Don’t get me wrong it is an amazing speaker. But the different between this one and the a1 does not justify the increased size. I got it on an offer at the same price as my a1 and i could still return the a1. After trying both of them for a week i am keeping the a1.

  1. I want to love this speaker. But i was sold a speaker that i could take camping and it last the whole night. I was sold a speaker i could play on the beach and still have juice for dinner. I was sold a speaker that lasts 24h. The reality is the speaker has never even lasted 2h on high volume. The huge caveat b&o never stated in their marketing is that their 24h claim is for when the speaker is on less than half the volume. It might last 24h but on a whisper, at best. This single factor has meant there’s no way i could recommend this speaker. The number of times i’ve been in the middle of enjoying my music only to hear the dreaded ‘low battery’ beeps.

Having owned one of these for a couple of years we’ve finally given up using it and it sits on shelf gathering dust while we use a ue wonderboom around the house or on holiday. The sound quality is good, nice and bassy and fills even pretty large rooms, however the battery is shocking which then impacts the volume and sound quality significantly. After about an hour at high volume (if that) the speaker drops to a forced much lower volume presumably to preserve battery, which means it suddenly can’t be heard above any other level of reasonably loud background noise. On two occasions friends have then brought out their smaller and cheaper bose speaker which have lasted a lot longer at high volumes. One of my most disappointing tech purchases and at nearly £300 the fact its been replaced by a £70 speaker in our household tells you everything you need to know about value for money.

    • This does not work with either of our phones – a samsung tab s2 (android tablet) and a oneplus 3. Sure the sound is excellent and all that, but when you have to use it with your laptop, when a decent 5:1 system costs £35 what’s the point of spending £200 for a mono one?very angry.

The sound quality is superb and i love how portable this is. I will stick with b&o portable speakers from now on. It does knick and crack a bit too easily, and eventually broke after 2. 5 years when the power input gave out. So not great durability but i loved being able to use the speaker all over my house, and take it with me on holiday, and take it outside. The battery lasted a long time. Very happy with it overall, just wished it had had a longer life.

    • Great sound from such a compact speaker but the battery life is shockingly bad at best. . 2 hrs maximum when it is disconnected from the wall and less than 4 hrs even when it’s plugged in. I have had b&o products for 30 years and this is a very disappointing product. It also takes an age to fully charge when the unit is switched off.

If you can not play it on full volume when on charge what is the point last about 2 hours and then fades the volumesent it back twice and can not get a refund because over the 30 days total waste of money get the boss speaker.

    • Sound quality is just awesome but the battery life is just awful, returned said item for this reason.

  12. This speaker sounds great, looks pretty good (better in the flesh that the photos) and is well built (apart from the charger which is cheap and nasty). However, i am totally shocked at how bad the battery performance is compared to what i was promised. I’m getting just 1 hour, playing some bob marley at 60% volume. You’ve probably heard the claims of ‘all day battery performance’ and ‘24 hours of misic’ but these are outright lies that b&o absolutely must have been aware we’re not true. A quick google search will show you forums full of people getting the same results. I love the design and sound of the b&o brand but they have shown that if they make a product with a poor feature, they will just lie to you about it to get you to spend premium money on it anyway. I won’t be trusting them again.

    • Nice design, amazing sound, shockingly poor battery performance. Having owned a ue megaboom in the past i was used to getting a good 2 days full use between charges for over 2 years until it died. To replace it i thought i’d go more premium and splash out on the b&o. While the sound is rich and full i was only getting 3-4 hours use on 50% volume and around 90 minutes on 75% volume before having to charge which is a far far cry from the 24 hours b&o claim. The app also lacks in being unable to turn the speaker on. Very disappointed especially with the misleading battery claims made from such a premium brand. I’ve added 2 screenshots, one from the app showing the sound level indicated by the outer circle bottom left corner and the time achieved in the second screenshot playing norah jones before the speaker needed recharging.

Designthe a2 active looks essentially identical to its predecessor and that’s a good thing. The design was solid, reassuring and incredibly straightforward. Don’t be fooled with its name though, this isn’t some sporty monstrosity covered in rubber and brandishing a pointless racing stripe. Instead b&o have taken the word active to mean: ‘how do i move my living room speaker outside?’ well for starters you certainly don’t compromise on the design, instead you simply do all the tinkering under the hood. That means in terms of visual changes the only real difference is that instead of the classic leather handle you now get two nato-style canvas handles which can better withstand the demanding rigours of your garden/beach. The speakers don’t lose any design points because once again b&o have nailed the colour ways, keeping things in line with an autumnal/winter set of colour ways that look great. As you’ve probably guessed, we quite like the design. Sound qualitythis is going to be another few gushy paragraphs we’re afraid as the a2 active again has retained all of the features that appeared on the a2, including great sound. The a2 active sounds fantastic. By combining large drivers with a dense metal internal structure the a2 and a2 active are able to reduce vibrations across the body of the speaker giving a clarity and breadth of sound that’s hard to reproduce in a speaker that’s portable.

I tried one of these in the apple store and was pleasantly surprised, the sound quality was rather good, especially given the small size and slim nature of the unit. I saw one on amazon and at the price thought it was a no brainer, so ordered one. It arrived as always at amazon speed so that was brilliant. I tried it and it was almost as good as in the store but then the volume dropped. Turns out this is part of the design, as when the battery gets low it ‘conserves’ power so drops the volume to nearly audible. So i plugged it in to an apple charger, and it commences charging. But the volume doesn’t increase for ages and ages, repeatly dropping again. So i thought perhaps give it a few cycles of use and discharge, then charging. But it is a major issue, today whilst in the kitchen at a fair but not excessive volume after not even 80 minutes it dropped. I have sent it back and will stick to my bose sound link lll (much better than the mini) which sounds awesome and when fully charged still lasts most of the day.

The sound quality from this little speaker is surprisingly good. It performs very well on the high, medium and low frequencies. When the bass drops in a song it’s hard to believe that it’s coming from what looks like your mates virgin media wireless router. The thing that really lets this speaker down is the battery life. Nobody would have probably cared if it was 1cm thicker and had a battery 5x the size it has, which is what it needs. On full blast it will barely last an hour and then when it is on charge it keeps the volume at 50%. The charging speed (which takes about 3 hours to get full while switched off) cannot keep up while it is in use so it’s basically useless once it’s dead. If you’re cool to spend £300 on a speaker that can only be played at 50% volume for 5 hours at a push, then this is the one for you. Otherwise there are much better options out there. Returned mine twice as i thought the battery was faulty in the first one, but no that’s just what it is.

Having had my a2 for just over two years, i have only been able to use it a handful of times due to an apparent battery / pier fault. If left unplugged for about two months to fully discharge, i get 2 hours or so of use. B&o customer service not interested. Poor show show for what i think have every potential to be a great product.
