Despite the reviews i’d read about the sound quality not being as good as the older, taller echo, my family all think it has a slight edge on the older device. The base response is about the same (no surprise there as i think it’s got the same base speaker) but the thing everyone liked was that at higher volumes, it’s not as harsh on the ears as the taller (older) echo. I miss the volume adjustment via the ring, but it’s not worth dropping a star for that.
Excellent especially with the addition of amazon echo music unlimited for only £1 a week good sound and can give many lines of information but a bit vague on help for crossword s when stuck.
No trouble with the sound output. Bit of a struggle asking for some music from our prime and unlimited amazon prime subscriptions but sometimes it gave the wrong result verbally, yet played the right music. Set up one person’s wifi using the iphone setting and spotting the device, eventually, and all okay once oddities had been sorted by resets etc. . Tried to set up partner’s iphone which we were assured was quite possible so long as the same wifi connection was used, and then hit trouble. Put in these – a new amazon account, tried a new email address and new passwords, and three hours later, still on the ‘phone to amazon because it will not accept a different iphone number on the account. They were not too quick to understand how to do it either. Codes ‘sent’ for connection, but not received. Probably the worst two hours ever spent and admit to having a computer in the house continuously since 1982 and mobiles since about 1999. Never really had tech troubles. Even did some programming for a while. However, as one knows, sometimes there is no straightforward route through and one glitch can cause a breakdown. Com as we bought one echo 2nd from them at the same time, as the one from amazon.

Comments from buyers
“Alexa really is great, Turns out the Echo is a wonderful bit of kit!, As good as the 1st generation.”
Get the question right but cloth ears alexa doesn’t understand you and claims you got it wrong. Other than it eavesdropping on every word you ever say i don’t get why you need one sat there. Maybe if i had a hive and hue bulbs out would be great. But i have a phone and if i wanted a bluetooth speaker i would get something with aptx.
Having been involved in voice recognition products some years ago, i know how difficult it is to make them work reliably. It takes very little practice to learn how to phrase things and i’m getting almost 100% success after 1 day. It works brilliantly with sonos although the echo is very good sound quality on its own, the echo dot understandably lacks bass. Can’t fault it, absolutely superb.
Bought this to eventually connect to smart devices in our house. Its great for listening to music and radio. It will also give you weather reports specific to your locality. Still exploring all the apps that will connect with it but very pleased so far, particularly as it was reduced in price. The one niggle i have is the software could be improved so that the flash updates could be separated out into separate categories. If you just wanted one flash update such as the weather it goes through all the other flash updates you’ve chosen at the same time to get to the weather. Its great for updating your calendar and for setting timers and reminders.
The trouble is that for echo or alexa to be any use, there has to be a large amount of smart house equipment available for it to work with and the lighting, heating, sound and entertainment systems have to be compliant with echo/alexa. While echo is good value for money, what you have to do to make it useful is quite a large expense. Another issue is that it is not easily apparent how one can use the echo to initialise telephone calls with a mobile to ones contact list. My car hands free can so why not echo. Basically not a lot of use until it can be used with an iphone and make telephone calls.
For it’s price, i won’t complain much. I am mildly concerned that the music becomes distorted when at high volume. It appears that in order to maintain a good balance between quality and loudness, the highest you can go is 7/8 (out of 10) – depending on the song. For this limitation i can only give 4 stars. I do find myself using the ‘remind me’ feature a lot, its very useful and convenient; or ‘set a timer’. Another few things i have picked up on:does struggle when asking it to play foreign songs, i. It will not understand the native pronunciation of a foreign song. When playing at high volume, it will happen that you have to scream at it for it to hear you. On occasion, it will misunderstand what you’re saying – which is completely understandable.
What i like; it has good quality sound and is a sleek looking speaker. What i don’t like; you have to have premium spotify account for it to play any music on verbal request. We only found this out after buying it. The echo cannot respond to many things that seem simple requests; for example, “play. ’s latest album”, and it will only play a random playlist of that artist. It often cannot tell me what song is playing on the radio, meaning i still have to use shazam a lot. It only lets one person who is signed up to it have access to the shopping list and calendar, which seems ridiculous. Unfortunelty husband loves gimmicks, so we’ve got to keep the waste of money.
I was so impressed with the echo plus that i had in my kitchen i bought one for my bedroom, it is only limited by the questions you ask it, this can be a serious educational tool for your kids and fun too. I have it read books, science pod casts, news etc because i am a rubbish sleeper it helps with long nights. Listen to the world service, 4 extra or any other programs, talk to family members who have one or leave a message, put things on your shopping lists or set up reminders. The lists are endless, ask it for the formula for the volume of a sphere. Instantly replies, any maths questions. . Because i have prime the music is endless from the 60s to pavroti it is a delight to listen to the sound quality is excellent.
I had a free music trial with it and have had great fun asking for favourite music. The sound is very good indeed. I was lucky to buy this at a special offer and the quality of the speaker was well worth the price i paid. would only say the instructions could be a bit clearer, i did have a small problem connecting to my broadband and the fix was confusing. After i got started its was fine. Several people who have come to the house have been so impressed they intend to buy it also.
Very very happy with this purchasei purchased the echo on prime day along with the eufy lumos smart bulb-white bulb. It came to about £65 at the time. I wish i had bought two in hindsight as a gifti chose the echo rather than the dot purely because of reviews that the quality of speaker on the echo is better. A few friends of mine have the dot so i knew of the benchmark quality, and i can say that the echo is far better. It’s crisp and fills the room. I mostly use this for listening to audiobooks on audible and it’s fantastic. In the day i might have this sat in the living room where my friends and i can ask alexa to play various songs we call out. And in the evening i often move it (because i only have the one 🙁 ) into my room and ask alexa to play one of my audiobooks for a given time – e. ‘play the secret barrister on audible’ and ‘stop playing after 30 minutes’.
I am rather disappointed in this item, i have a deep gruff voice and it doesn’t understand half of what i say. I asked her for the latest score in a liverpool football game and she hadn’t a clue, ever when asked by my wife we got the same response. I think that the review that said that it was ok if you were in the usa got it spot on, we are just classed as second rate over here. I got the app on my phone and tried to change the sound for the alarm, just wouldn’t do it for the one i chose. I also asked her to change the volume of the alarm she had no idea, the only way to do this is with the app.
Wow i was blown away when i heard a friend’s echo, i knew right away i had to get one. As a prime customer it arrived the next day, i was so excited to set it up and it was so easy and didn’t take long at all before i was playing music and making my own play lists. The sound quality is second to none, the bass is amazing. For a little thing like the echo to pump music out like that it’s brilliant, after a couple of days i ordered myself an echo dot too for the bedroom. Now my son wants one in his bedroom lol, what have i started loli have even signed up to the unlimited music and can play any song just by speaking to it.
I really like it the only thing i was upset about was the fact that you need \ mobile phone to send messages to another echoi bout the dot thinking that i could speak from room to room but no you need a mobile phone as i do not have one it isno good for that but good for every thing else we live in the country so do not have a smart home which also does not work i think the engineers should think of us country bumpkins.
Easy to set up and is well made with great features. However, the sound quality is not as good as i expected. The bass is very prominent and at time of review, only volume can be adjusted. Therefore, you either have a volume level you can hear with overly dominant bass or lower volume which is difficult to listen to clearly. Reluctantly, i have to report that i am disappointed with the product. I was all ready to buy another two units but i won’t until the sound quality is getting better reviews.
How did i ever live without it. Worth investing in the amazon echo music. I bought another for my parents who are in their 80s. They are awful telly addicts but now spend most of their time listening to all the music they love. It’s really brought them joy. My dad is more polite to alexa than he is to me. Every elderly person needs one of these.
I love mine, however i got it in the sale at £69. 99, now at that price it is well worth the money, at the original not so much. Firstly you need to have an amazon prime/amazon music account or amazon audible account in place to use the whole “alexa play. To play any sort of music you need to have an account of some sort regardless, spotify, amazon, tunein. Other than that it’s pointless connecting it to the wifi as it will have to be connected to your bluetooth and play the tunes off your phone. It then becomes a boom box, albeit an expensive boom box and pretty much a waste of time as boom boxes can be carted with you, this can’t. Star removed for thisi haven’t attempted the smart home stuff yet but will update once i do. I haven’t changed the case as i like the grey fabric but the fact that i am able too is a bonusit doesn’t have a charge function and that is annoying, so instead of being able to carry it round the house with me or take it in my car or even the bathroom whilst i have a shower, i have to make sure there’s a plug socket near by as you are not able to do this, i have knocked off a star for this as sometimes it’s inconvenient.
This is really a superb speaker. I’m very fussy about my speakers and will say it won’t compete for sound with sonos or hifi set up. However it is not supposed to. As a speaker to use in a kitchen etc. The sound is good for a speaker that size. I have mine hooked up to multi room with my hifi using an echo. It’s great for that adding sound at my level. I use it independently for when my kids are around as hifi too loud.
I have spotify, if i didn’t, or any other paid for music streaming, then i would give 4 stars. I use my echo2 mainly for listening to music. It’s brilliant for starting , stopping and choosing any songs by voice. I also find it handy for reminders as it saves logging notes on the phone or finding a pencil and paper. Handy for turning up the heating and controlling other smart stuff. The speaker is very good, 9/10.
Well i gave it a few days before i left a review so here goes. I was really surprised how easy it was to set up once i had downloaded the amazon alexa app to my phone. The set up between my echo and our broadband hub just took a few moments and away we went. A first class piece of equipment well built and superb sounding speakers and we are really pleased with our purchase and we wish we had bought one before.
Having invested in an echo dot, wanted to get a second for another room, got this as i expected the speaker to be of a higher quality, it is. My 88 year old dad now has the dot in the living room with him. He uses it for all his olde worlde music, racing and lottery results, weather and useless facts, he is blown away by her and has been demo ing it to all his relatives over the phonethe games skills are awesome, the smart home skills are just so star trek, absolutely has changed our lives, ai :- creepy, awesome, helpful, funny and simply the future.
There are definite pro’s and con’s to the echo, quite good selection of music but for a greater range of choice you do need to add amazon music. Asking questions can also be a little limiting but hopefully this will improve with time as alexa evolves. Sound quality is good and alexa understands most commands – i suspect she has ‘selective hearing’ at times. Not yet added any smart equipment so unable to comment at present time. Some amusing games can be added for free. I have given 4 stars as even with alexa’s current limitations and potential additional costs ( music, audio books etc) this little device has great potential, for the initial price if nothing else it’s a great music player. I will be adding additional echo devices in other rooms to enhance aleza’s interactive ability – and also save me shouting ‘ dinner is ready’.
Very easy to set up, took me about 5 minutes you just follow the app. I did need instructions on how to set up calling and messaging, but that was all in the help section and once set up i immediately had a message from a friend. It’s fun to use, the sound is very clear and good quality, i the bought dot after setting this one up to use in another room.
